This installation of curious devices examines the idea of “surrogate activities”; a term borrowed from Ted Kaczynski’s 1996 essay Industrial Society and Its Future. Also commonly referred to as the Unabomber Manifesto, this article expresses the belief that modern society and leftist politics have deprived individuals of autonomy while promoting technologies that exploit and destroy the natural environment. Surrogate activities are directed toward achieving artificial goals, and can provide reassurance in what may otherwise be confusing times.
